A Chiropractor is a health care professional that focuses on disorders of the synovial joints and other musculo skeletal and nervous system, and the effects of these disorders on general health. Doctors of Chiropractic practice a hands-on approach to health care that includes patient examination, diagnosis and treatment, with the use of joint manipulation. Chiropractors have broad diagnostic skills and are also trained to recommend therapeutic and rehabilitative exercises, as well as to provide nutritional, dietary and lifestyle counselling.

The most common therapeutic procedure performed by a Chiropractor is known as “spinal manipulation,” or a “chiropractic adjustment”. A Chiropractic adjustment is a manual procedure that uses highly refined skills developed during the intensive years of chiropractic education. The technique involves the chiropractor applying thrusts of varying speed and forces to synovial joints in the body, particularly the facet joints of the spine, in order to reduce pain and restore or enhance joint function. A chiropractic adjustment rarely causes discomfort.

what is chiropractic

The chiropractic adjustment is often described as a “cracking” or “popping” sound. The “popping” or “cracking” noise that is often heard is simply gas bubbles being released due to a change of pressure within the joint. There is no pain involved. Patients often note positive changes in their body following the treatment. The best way to describe it is when you open a coke bottle for the first time you get that release of gas, as it moves from a high pressure area to a low pressure area. That is the same as the “popping” or “cracking” noise after an adjustment. This sound has nothing to do with the quality of the adjustment.

An everyday action or exposure to physical, chemical and/or emotional stresses, can cause any of your movable vertebrae to lose its normal motion. This causes the joint to become jammed, leading to irritation of both the joint and its nerve and other surrounding structures such as muscle. Both the nerve and trigger point formation within the muscle can cause pain within the vicinity and refer elsewhere.

So anyone can suffer from such pain syndromes, therefore anyone of all ages can benefit from Chiropractic care!
